Smart-Bit® Pre-drilling and Countersinking Tool for Decks and Woodworking
For use with hardwoods and matching Headcote® and Deckfast® Stainless Screws
The Smart-Bit® Pre-drilling and Countersinking Tool is designed for decking and general woodworking. The tool features a pre-set countersink, a free spinning stop collar to protect the work surface, and replaceable Powerbolic® fluted drill bits that cut through decking more than twice as fast as standard wood bits.
Headcote® and Deckfast® Stainless compatible: The countersink profiles of Smart-Bit tools are precisely matched to Headcote and Deckfast Stainless screws. For materials that require pre-drilling, especially hardwoods, this product combination makes it easy to achieve a clean and professional finish.
Free-Spinning Stop Collar with O-ring
The Smart-Bit stop collar spins free of the drill bit, preventing marring or burnishing of the deck surface. When the stop collar stops spinning, the hole is complete.
Anti-Clog Debris Cavity
The Smart-Bit debris cavity gathers waste material, keeping it clear of the countersink, unlike conventional flush mounted countersinks. The waste simply falls out onto the deck surface after each hole is completed.
Powerbolic® High-Speed Drill Bit
The Powerbolic bit has specially designed fluting that cuts through decking more than twice as fast as standard wood bits.
Smart-Bit matches the head diameter, head angle and countersink depth of corresponding Headcote and Deckfast Stainless screws for the perfect hole and fit./p>
Smart-Bit tools come with two extra Replacement Bits and a 3/32” hex wrench for use with the set screw that holds the drill bits in place. Replacement Bits are also sold separately.
Pre-set Shaft Length
Together with the countersink, the overall hole depth for the #7 Trim, #8 Trim and #10 Flat sizes is 1-1/8” deep, designed for use with lumber up to 5/4” (nominal).
The hole is complete when the collar stops spinning. To clean the debris cavity, hold the free-spinning stop collar in one hand and run the drill away from the work surface. The waste material will simply eject itself.
Extending the Life of the Drill Bit
To extend the life of the drill bit, drill in a straight and stable fashion. Two-handed operation is highly recommended. Drilling into ipe or similarly dense materials can be hard work. Rest as needed and don't sacrifice stability for speed!
Sizes and Packaging
Smart-Bit comes in three standard sizes for decking – #7 Trim, #8 Trim and #10 Flat – and two larger sizes with longer bits, great for boardwalks and timber applications – #12 Flat and #14 Flat. The #14 Flat tool comes with two drill bits for a 40mm deep hole and one bit for a 75mm deep hole. Every Smart-Bit tool package contains one (1) complete tool, two (2) extra replacement bits and one (1) hex wrench.

|*Overall hole depth includes countersink portion. When installing decking it is general practice to not pre-drill the underlying (joist) material, as this is usually treated lumber and does not require pre-drilling. The 1-1/8" overall hole depth of the #7 Trim, #8 Trim and #10 Flat sizes provides sufficient depth for installing deck lumber up to 5/4" nominal size.|
